STARSIL Hemostat ®

ULTRA-HYDROPHILIC ABSORBABLE POLYSACCHARIDE TECHNOLOGY

🔬 What It Is

STARSIL Hemostat ® is a topical, plant-based hemostatic powder made from purified polysaccharides (starch derivatives). It works by rapidly absorbing water from blood, causing the concentration of platelets and coagulation factors to increase at the bleeding site — this accelerates the natural clotting process.

⚙️ How It Works

When applied to a bleeding surface, the powder:

  1. Forms a gel-like barrier that adheres to the tissue.

  2. Concentrates blood components, enhancing coagulation.

  3. Creates a mechanical seal, helping stop bleeding within seconds to minutes.

  4. Is fully resorbable by the body within a few hours to days — no removal needed.

🏥 Typical Surgical Uses

STARSIL Hemostat ® is commonly used in:

  • General and visceral surgery

  • Cardiac and vascular surgery

  • Orthopedics and trauma surgery

  • Gynecology and obstetrics (e.g., C-sections)

  • Neurosurgery and spinal procedures

  • ENT and plastic surgery

FAQ STARSIL Hemostat ®

Starsil Hemostat ® is a plant-based hemostatic powder used to seal wounds and control bleeding during surgical procedures, as well as to help prevent adhesions during the healing phase following operations in the gastrointestinal tract and in gynecology.
The powder consists of starch, a plant polysaccharide, and contains no human or animal components, fillers, or other additives.
Polysaccharides, a subclass of carbohydrates, are complex sugars composed of many monosaccharide units, the number of which is unknown. Several monosaccharides form a chain and are then called a biopolymer. Examples of polysaccharides include glycogen, starch (amylose, amylopectin), and cellulose.
Upon contact, the ultra-hygroscopic STARSIL HEMOSTAT ® particles rapidly absorb fluid from the blood. This process leads to a local concentration of blood cells such as erythrocytes, platelets, serum proteins, and thrombin, thereby accelerating the natural coagulation cascade. It forms a dense gel matrix that seals the wound and inhibits further bleeding.
Starsil Hemostat ® consists exclusively of starch and therefore differs in both its composition and mode of action from other hemostasis preparations such as fibrin glue, fleeces, sponges, and sprays. Unlike other plant-based polysaccharides such as cellulose, Starsil Hemostat is completely metabolized by the human body.
After administration, the powder is neutralized and inactivated with saline solution. This is important because the powder binds to any fluids, which are not intended for the surrounding tissue. The powder is then broken down by the body via amylase, an enzyme that breaks down and metabolizes starch, and excreted through the kidneys. This process is complete within 48 to 72 hours.
